The Man from Rock Bottom

A Sci-Fi Adventure Novel

He's isolated, on the edge, scared out of his mind, and humanity's last hope.  He's the Man from Rock Bottom, and he's having one of those days.

The setting of this novel is the post-post apocalypse.  Humanity conquered the stars, then our empire collapsed and we returned to Earth.  There, we fell to violent tribalism, while our governments tried to force us to need them by unleashing genetically engineered horrors, diseases and monsters.  Now the Earth is mostly a Wasted Land.

There is some hope, however: Sunflower City, a city build by a group of aliens who think we might still be able to become something better than what we are.  A group led by Scintillant Camor, Head of the Ministry of Life.

Of course it's not going to be that simple.  The Man from Rock Bottom gets caught up in a tangle of suicide, murder, intrigue, kidnapping, and conspiracy as he navigates his way through the monster-infested labyrinths below Sunflower City, where not even the cleaning robots dare to tread.  All because somebody's got to save the day, and like it or not, that somebody seems to be him.

Angel @ the End of the World:
A Story from New Rat City

Banner art by Mary Mouse

The setting is an unfortunately not at all distant future where the genetic revolution came with advancements that rivaled the computerized revolutions of prior times.  With these advancements came new ways to fight wars, reshaping battlefields into strange and warped environments, aggressive artificial ecosystems that easily spread beyond their nominal boundaries.

To fight in these new environments, a new sort of people had to be invented: the morphs.  With human genetics re-shaped sufficiently to no longer legally count as human to international law; with all the advantages of bestial shapes and human intellects combined; with all the loyalty that could be ingrained into them via subliminal training while they were still in their artificial wombs, they were our soldiers and our slaves.

And then the wars came to an end.

Discarded war toys, the morphs have retreated to enclaves within the urban wastelands that once housed the now devastated population of baseline humanity.  The greatest of these is New Rat City, nestled into the sprawl of what was once the Eastern Seaboard Megalopolis.  This is the place that Kanda Har Trask, morph, former slave-soldier, former space pirate, current bodyguard-for-hire, calls home.

He's just enjoying a quiet night at Cutty's, his favorite morph-focused gathering place, when the angel walks through the door.  Of course, she's being hunted.  Of course, she needs someone to protect her.  And of course, Kanda Har's just the sucker who can't resist taking up the job, even if it means he's going to get himself embroiled in a supernatural shadow war whose results could easily spell the end of Earth as he knows it.

The story is a mix of cyberpunk, neo-noir, and supernatural thriller, and it's presently in the works.
